Based on the best-seller by Philip Gardiner, this presentation doesn’t suffer from the book-to-film translation woes that many productions suffer from, most likely because this visual presentation of Gnosis was directed by the author himself. And what a visual feast Gnosis is! A mesmerising hour of saturated imagery colour-blasted onto the viewer’s retina, accompanied by a diverse array of music ranging from tribal beats, Celtic voices and modern rock that all seem designed to lull the viewer into a calm and receptive state. The combination of sound and image is so compelling and hypnotic that at times it seems that Gardiner might in fact be tapping some secret part of our consciousness in order to get his message across.
The images chosen by the director are dense with rich colour and full of meaning, the super-imposition of ancient art with modern imagery creating a dynamic connection between the past and the present. Combined with the trance-inducing music, Gardiner’s regulated voice-over gently introduces the fundamental core of Gnosis and, via a gentle series of transitions, explores the secret history of humanity, crossing across concepts as various as orthodox religion and serpent cults to Kundalini science and the enlightenment process. And the audience needs to be guided slowly, for the author’s message is as profound as this DVD experience is – humanity needs to stop casting about wildly for answers to universal questions, and look within itself for its own divinity. As Gardiner makes plainly clear, we need to stop searching for Solomon’s Temple – its existence is symbolic and it resides within all of us, waiting to be re-discovered. And once we understand that we will have Gnosis – true knowledge.
